Tier Three - Tertiary
Tier three, or tertiary PBIS is the last piece of the PBIS pyramid. Tier three is for those students who need additional support in addition to primary and secondary supports. Students who exhibit problem behavior that is frequent, highly disruptive, dangerous, hinders their learning, or excludes them socially and/or academically should be considered for tier three support.
Steps Implementing Tier Three:
1. Decide how to identify students in need or tier three support. Will students need a certain amount of referrals? Teacher request? Parent Request?
2. Create a team responsible for creating Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). This team will look very similar to the PBIS team but should also include the student's parent(s). We must always remember that a student's parent is a team's number one resource as they know their child better than anyone else and can offer insights the team may otherwise never have. The team may also include the student (if appropriate), other people who know the student well, mental health professionals, or other types of therapists.
3. Collect resources for completing tier three interventions (i.e. FBA observation charts and other data collection tools). See the Additional Resources page for templates of data collection tools.
4. Collect data on student interventions and analyze data. Make changes where necessary.
Once it has been determined that a student is in need of tier three support, the team must complete the Functional Behavior Assessment. Click Here to learn more about FBA's.
