What is PBIS?
The first question this website needs to answer is, what is PBIS? PBIS is the abbreviation for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. There are three tiers, or levels of PBIS. The first tier is Primary Prevention, also known as school-wide PBIS (SW-PBIS). SW-PBIS is a program designed for an entire school in which specific behavior expectations are taught to all students and are enforced throughout the school. Successful SW-PBIS will increase positive behavior and academic achievement while preventing problem behavior with all students. Tier three is a proactive approach to discipline that promotes positive student behavior and increased learning through teaching, monitoring, and supporting all students. The primary level of PBIS relies on research-based behavioral and instructional principles and decisions are data-based.
The second tier of PBIS is the Secondary Prevention tier. This tier is for students who need a little extra support through intensive, or targeted interventions beyond the school-wide level. Some secondary intervention methods include the Check in - Check out method and the behavior contract plan. To learn more about these methods, visit the Tier Two page of this site. Secondary Prevention addresses the needs of those students who require a little extra support, but do not quite need the intensity of the third tier of PBIS.
The third tier of PBIS is referred to as Tertiary Prevention. Tertiary prevention is for students who are not responding to Secondary Prevention and display frequent, highly disruptive, and/or dangerous problem behavior. Additionally, if the student's behavior is interfering with the their learning or the learning of others, or is isolating them socially or academically, the student should be considered for Tertiary Prevention. Through Tertiary Prevention, a Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA) will be conducted in order to determine why the student turns to problem behavior. Once the FBA is completed, the PBIS team will create a Behavior Intervention Plan to teach the student positive replacement behaviors. Both Functional Behavior Analyses and Behavior Intervention Plans are discussed in depth in this website.
Why Does PBIS Work?
PBIS is successful because:
1. It addresses the individual, behavioral needs of all students with proven, easy to use strategies.
2. It allows schools to individualize PBIS to address their core behavioral values and expectations.
3. It is affordable and does not have to overwhelm staff given the limited time and resources that schools generally have.
4. It creates a positive school atmosphere.
5. Fewer disciplinary incidents creates more time for instruction and academic success!
